It's always marketing. Back then there wasn't well returned feed back for their games. Now there is and with things the way they are nintendo probably felt that they can make their own RPG series just as good as the first. Plus there were new gamers comming into the gaming world, so to deal demand from both sides, they would play it safe and make their own game. Now sadly the games are stale with limited story and so much focus on changing rpg game play that it takes away the emerssiveness of the original rpg aspect. Mario rpg wasn't just about mario it was about his party, his party that stood as equals to mario, like Geno and Mallow and Peach and Bowser. The only Games that came close to this again was super paper mario and Mario and luigi Bowser's inside story. Nintendo needs to be creative again but not just with game play, they need to work on story again. Not another Mario vs Bowser story.
