You are aware that Nintendo has actually worked with Square a good number of times in the last decade or so, right? Of the top of my head, Fortune Street, Mario Hoops: 3-on-3, and Mario Sports Mix are the only ones that stand out, but that's still at least three instances.
Those were in the Wii/DS era though when Super Mario RPG and Final Fantasy games were on VC. Square has been very unsupportive outside of Japan during the current Nintendo consoles' lifespans.
